Forgot your flash drive? (How to save your work or other items by e-mailing them to yourself!)

Have you ever found yourself working on one of the college's computers when you realize that you cannot save your work because you left your flash drive at home?

There is an easy way around this!

You can save your work (temporarily) to the computer that you're working on, and then e-mail it to yourself!

Just follow these steps:

  1. Save the file to the computer.  This can be to the desktop or the documents folder.  The important thing is to remember where you saved it!
  2. Log in to your e-mail.  This can be your HAWKMail or any other e-mail account that you regularly use.
  3. Start a new message, and enter your own e-mail address in the to: field.
  4. Use the attachment option and attach the file that you saved to the e-mail.
  5. Send the e-mail.
  6. Wait to make sure that the e-mail shows up in your mailbox, and that the document is successfully attached.
  7. Go to the place that you saved the e-mail, and delete it from the public computer.
Feel free to check with a library staff member if you would like some additional help in doing this for the first time!

Scanning in the Library!

Did you know that the printer / photocopier in the HACC York library also can be used as a scanner?

This is not only helpful if you need to scan something such as an important document, but it also can be used when you do not have change for the photocopier!  (Just scan the item, and then use your printing account to print it out!)

The scanner can either scan directly to your usb/flash drive, or it will scan to a folder that can be found on our public computers.  If you would like to use the scanner, just ask a library staff person to walk you through the steps!

Library Computers (Desktops AND Laptops!)

The HACC York library has many public computers available for to use.  However, there are times of days when these computers are very popular.

If you visit the library to use a computer, and find that they are all taken.  Don't give up.  Bring your student ID to the circulation desk and request a laptop.  (You will need to sign a laptop agreement the first time that you use a laptop each semester.)

Laptops need to stay in the library, but you can take them to any table or study room.  They are connected to the printing system through their wireless connection.  If you're not a fan of using the trackpads on a laptop, you can also check out a mouse!

Library Databases from Off-Campus

Thanks to HACC's great variety of library databases, much of your research can be done from any place that has an Internet connection!

If you are off-campus, and you are currently enrolled in HACC classes, you can still use HACC Library databases.  When you click on a database, instead of going directly to the resource, you will be asked to log in.  (If you are on-campus, the publisher knows that you are a HACC student.  If you are off-campus, they need to make sure that you can legally access it!)

Your login screen will look like this:


Just use your HACC ID and PIN to log in, and you will be able to use one of our databases for: articles, reference, e-books, and more!

A word of advice:  Try logging in from home before you really need to.  This way you will be able to find out if there are any problems with your ID and PIN before you really need it!

Forward HAWKMail messages to your own personal e-mail account!

Did you know that  you MUST check your HAWKMail regularly, but to make this easier, you can have those messages forwarded to your regular e-mail account?

Just working in the library, I hear from several students who admit that they never check their HAWKMail.  These conversations usually occur after after something serious comes up (such as realizing that they cannot see their grades or register for classes) all because they missed something important since they did not check their HAWKMail.

Many of these same students DO have some other type of e-mail account (through their Internet provider, Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and more).  If you check this e-mail regularly, then all you need to do is forward your HAWKMail messages to this account, and you will finally be getting your messages from HACC, your instructors, other students, etc!

How to forward your HAWKMail:
  1. On the HACC web page, look to the top right corner and click HAWKMail
  2. On the HAWKMail page, look for  the red HAWKMail box.  This will show a link to a document called "How to forward HAWKMail (pdf)".  Just open this (print if needed), and follow the directions to forward your HAWKMail to an e-mail account of your choice!


    If you do not have a private e-mail account then please remember that you must remember to check your HAWKMail regularly.  Important announcements and messages are sent through this account, and students are expected to check this regularly!

    Where IS the HACC York Library?

    HACC York is growing quickly, and if you haven't had a chance to explore the Leader Building, yet, you might not have found us!

    The easiest directions to give are: Do you know where the bookstore is?  We are right across the lobby from the bookstore! :)



     

    If you're still not sure, here are directions to the library:
    1. The Leader Building is the first building on your left when you drive down Pennsylvania Avenue.  Student parking is in the large lot behind the building.  (Turn left on Neu Road to get to this parking lot.)
    2. When you enter the Leader Building, you are in the lobby.  Look to the left, and you will see the entrance to the library!
    3.  When you walk in, you will see the circulation desk ahead and to the right.  (This is where you can check out books, laptops, and more.)
    4.  The reference desk is just around the corner.  This is where you can ask for help with your research (and many other things that you might need help with).  If we cannot answer your question, we will try to direct you to someone who can! :)

    $10 (or 100 pages) of Printing Credit

    Occasionally, I'm sad to discover that a student at HACC didn't realize that they have $10 of printing credit every semester. 

    Yes, you do!!

    At the beginning of every semester, you have $10 of printing credit.  This is equal to 100 pages of printing at 10 cents per page.

    When you print from a HACC public computer, you will be asked to log in.



    The steps that you take after this depend on where you are.

    If you're in the library or the learning center:
    1.  Enter your HACC ID and PIN, then click send.
    2. Wait to be sure that your login was accepted, and click OK.
    3. Go to the print release station.
    4. Log in again.
    5. Select the request(s) that you want to print by putting a check in the boxes.  
    6. You will see the amount of money available in your account, and the amount of money that the print request will cost.
    7. Click Start Printing to send the request to the printer.
    If you are in a computer lab or at another public computer.
    1.  Enter your HACC ID and PIN, then click send.
    2. If your login is accepted, your request should go directly to the printer.

    Out of money? - Visit the library or learning center, where you can add more cash to your account. 
    • Please ask for help the first time that you do this!
    • Never add more money than you plan to use.  You will not be refunded excess money, and when a new semester begins, you will have $10 in your account, no matter how much money was there at the end of the previous semester.
